Mission Statement
Our goal is to provide financial, material, emotional and educational support to the children and families of the cane cutters in the Dominican Republic.
This goal will be partially achieved by increasing awareness among Canadians of the conditions present in the cane cutter camps and the misery they live daily, and by encouraging direct contact between Canadians and these impoverished people.
Purpose
- Outreach to the Haitian workers and families on the sugar cane fields in the Dominican Republic, to improve their conditions.
- Improve awareness among Canadians of modern day slavery
- Connect Canadians with the 3rd world by direct contact
Nature of Work
- Sponsor Community projects in bateyes (cane villages)
- Family Sponsorships for $300/year
- Outreach trips continuouely organized
- Immediate relief in our relationship with the Grey Sisters of Pembroke who operate a mission in Dominican Republic for over 40 years
Placement
Outreach trips for 1 week visit Consuelo and San Pedro de Macoris province (east of Santo Domingo) and several bateyes. Accomodation and food provided by a simple dorm in San Pedro.
Time Frame
Next trip organized for Dec. 10-17, 2005
Future trips planned for 3rd week in August/2006 and 3rd week of December/2006.

Cost to Participate
Dec. 10-17, 2005: $982 CAD (Air Fare $662 plus $320 for accommodation, food, transportation, guide, etc.)
2006 prices should be around $1,000-$1,100 CAD
Requirements
No special skills or experience required. Must be 18 or over. Children welcome with their parent(s).
Other Details
The overriding focus of the trip is as follows:
- a 3rd world experience, meeting and mingling with the poorest of the poor in Dominican Republic
- awareness of social injustice and seeing modern day slavery first hand
- making the poor feel important and loved; to encourage communication between 1st & 3rd world
For immediate relief, travelers are encouraged to gather donations of clothes, hygiene supplies (soaps, razors, toothbrushes, shampoo, etc.), shoes, school supplies, etc. We also ask every traveler to fund raise as much as they can (e.g. $500 or more) towards specific community projects such as latrine, water supply and electricity (based on the priorities set by the communities). Tax receipts for fund raising available.
