Mission Statement
Through the provision and development of services, and through the promotion of social planning and action, Catholic Social Services is dedicated to the enhancement of human well being in a spirit of truth and justice, of freedom and solidarity.
Purpose
Catholic Social Services is the largest multi-function social service agency in Canada, providing diverse services to persons of all faiths and cultures, throughout central and north-eastern Alberta.
Nature of Work
Catholic Social Services offers more than 100 programs serving over 60,000 individuals annually. Programs are delivered through both residential and community-based service delivery models. The Agency is comprised of 6 major service areas - Children and Youth Service, Community Service, Family Service, Immigration and Settlement Service, Rehabilitation Service, and Substance Abuse and Corrections Service.
Placement
Catholic Social Services provides services in central and north-eastern Alberta. Refer to agency website to identify communities where CSS offers services and/or volunteer opportunities.
Time Frame
Volunteer placements are part-time, for approximately 3 hours per week, for three to six months.
Commitment Begins
Volunteers are recruited throughout the year. A volunteer's commitment begins after completing the screening/orientation process, and is based on program/client needs; and the volunteer role.

Cost to Participate
Volunteers must have access to personal or public transportation in order to travel to their volunteer assignment site. Some agency programs may re-imburse volunteers for city bus tickets to and from their volunteer site.
Requirements
Volunteers must be permanent residents of Canada, or have a work visa, and possess English language fluency skills. They are required to be reliable, responsible adults (minimum of 18 years), who will respect volunteer/client boundaries, and will represent the Agency in an ethical and positive manner.
All volunteers must complete the following intake/screening measures prior to placement with Catholic Social Services:
- interview with Program Staff,
- application form,
- Police Information Check,
- Children's Services Intervention Record Check,
- 3 reference checks,
- Oath of Confidentiality, and
- an orientation.
Other Details
Clients, staff, and volunteers of Catholic Social Services represent diverse faiths and cultures. Individuals of any race, gender, ethnic origin, religion, or disability, may apply to be considered for a volunteer placement with the Agency.
CSS volunteers typically live in the community where they volunteer. Volunteer placements are generally 3 hours per week, for a minimum of a three to six months.
The Agency does not provide assistance with any of the following: immigration visas, housing, living expenses, transportation.
