Each project has its own particular arrangements. The expenses of travel to the country of work are sometimes covered, and sometimes not. Once you have joined the team, PBI covers all living expenses (food, lodging, travel expenses when doing PBI work) in the field during the term of service. Volunteers are responsible for purchasing health insurance coverage.
Once on the project, all volunteer work and living expenses are covered by the project, and a small monthly stipend is offered. Volunteers are also expected to help with general fundraising before and after fieldwork.
