Mission Statement

We, the Sisters of the Good Shepherd, an Apostolic/ Contemplative, international Congregation, desire to be transformed into compassionate witnesses of Jesus, the Good Shepherd, in his continuing work of reconciliation.

Purpose

To awaken in those we serve a sense of their worth and dignity as children of God. Our ministry is directed primarily to girls and women exploited by the systemic evil in society.

Nature of Work

Addressing family behavioral/emotional issues; battered women; residential/community based programs, pastoral care, outreach to refugees and immigrants.

On a global level, we address the following issues: trafficking women and children in the sex trade, prostitution; teen moms, infants and tots; prison work and aftercare; Aids, violence, abandoned children and young people.

Placement

In 68 countries - in six continents.

Requirements

For a Good Shepherd Sister: Ability to make a permanent commitment, and live in community. Good physical and mental health, age 25 years and up. Language of the country. A desire to work with people on the fringes. Secondary education and higher education.

For lay Associates and companions: annual renewal.

Volunteers: temporary.

Other Details

We focus particularly on the plight of women who are often the first victims of injustice, both personal and structural. We endeavour to provide a market to sell the crafts made by women in the third world, which helps them become economically self-supporting. We are a member of the NGO (non-governmental organization) of the United Nations.
